Shaker "Gift box"

Made by Elder Daniel Crossman in 1865 at New Lebanon, NY when he was 55 years of age.

In 1844, thirty-four year Brother Daniel took over the oval-box business from David Meacham Jr. the director of operations since 1821.

The box has a unique construction detail with a demi-lune joint replacing the traditional swallowtail ( fingers) construction.

The use as indicated on the affixed manuscript label was for “silk pieces”

It is likely the box was made for 18 year old Sister Ann Lucy Walker who was a Sister at Church Family, Harvard, MA when the box was made.

Sister Annie Walker was the daughter of Eldress Catherine Walker
